Song of the Day – Bayonne’s remix of Small Black’s “No One Wants It to Happen to You”

NYC’s Small Black have been churning out hypnotic, moody dance music for the past decade, including 2015’s Best Blues.

A little over a year has passed since that release and they’re on the road as tour support for Wild Nothing with an EP of remixed Best Blues cuts set to drop on November 4 via Jagjaguwar. At the start of this year, Wild Nothing debuted their remix of Small Black’s “Boys Life”, and today we bring you another remix from Best Blues, “No One Wants It to Happen to You.”

Gently pulled apart by Austin, TX, electronic musician Bayonne, “No One Wants It to Happen to You” is left feeling familiar while being sent on a journey towards a cosmic dance floor; the percussive backing track pushed up and the vocals sent floating way out towards outer space. Bayonne, a multi-instrumentalist who used to perform under his own name of Roger Sellers and is a former tour mate for Small Black, delivers similarly airy and dancey music on his own records. His remix has the light touch of an old friend. Bayonne’s minimal adjustments to the original leave a pleasant impression on the mind, a perfect song for when night heads towards morning and the sun first starts to touch the horizon.

Small Black play Atlanta tonight at The Masquerade in support of Wild Nothing. Doors are at 7:00pm and this could be one of your last chances to catch a show there before they move to Underground Atlanta. /- Billy Mitchell
