Behind the scenes with the Atlanta Locals.

“I just really liked the idea of focusing on something that made a beautiful woman very dangerous.” – Amber Renee of CLAVVS

UPON entering Aisle 5, a venue located on Euclid Ave, in Atlanta’s historic “Little 5 Points” neighborhood, everything feels right. The opening band, Bells & Robes, is rocking the house with their explosive brand of funky electronic chill-wave. The crowd is alive, and the energy is infectious.

Bells & Robes

Tonight would be host to something very exciting, Atlanta-based duo CLAVVS (Pronounced “Claws”), helmed by 4-time Grammy award-winning producer Graham Marsh, (Gnarls Barkley, Kid Cudi, T.I.) and vocalist+lyricist Amber Renee, delivers an alt-pop sound that is especially unique and powerful, and a little dark.

BACKSTAGE PASS: CLAVVS at Aisle 5 - 12/2/17This night was CLAVVS’ final big show in Atlanta this year, and duo was ready show off new single, “Like Daggers” (Featured in the video above) for the first time live. OpenEars had a chance to sit down with Graham and Amber before the show:

How did you two end up performing together?
Graham: “So me and Amber met at a house party, a mutual friend that was there told Amber to come over and hang out, and the night ended with us just jamming in my home studio, we were doing Radiohead covers back in my studio. I said ‘Hey, we should do some music together’ and started writing together, to like, pitch songs for other artists. Then kinda quickly I realized that we should be in a band together, so I kinda sheepishly asked Amber if she wanted to be in a band with me, and that’s where it started.”

Where does the name “CLAVVS” come from?
G: “That’s a better Amber question, I don’t know.”
Amber: “He knows! *Laughs* That’s a good question!”
A: “The name CLAVVS kinda comes from Greek mythology, I’m obsessed with Greek mythology, and the sirens of ancient lore were said to look like beautiful women, but they had these strange flaws, usually like long serpentine tails and claws. I just really liked the idea of focusing on something that made a beautiful woman very dangerous.”

BACKSTAGE PASS: CLAVVS at Aisle 5 - 12/2/17What was the most memorable show you’ve ever had?
A: “I would probably say our album release that we had earlier this year, for our new album, ‘World Underwater,’ it was in this very same venue, Aisle 5, and it was awesome, we were packed out, had so much fun, and it was just amazing.”

Any big dreams about next year?
A: “So many big dreams, nothing concrete, but I think 2018 is going to be probably our biggest year yet, we’re planning on putting out new music, we won’t say when, but we’re very excited!”
G: “Oh there’s my mom, right on time!”
