This week’s new album releases are highlighted by Atlanta soulstress Chelsea Shag‘s debut album, Colours, which feels like the next big pop star in the making. Colours finds Shag able to cross that fine line of being radio friendly pop with some hip hop style beats, while mixing jazz, blues, rock and Motown R&B in with her soulful voice, only to stop other extraordinary musicians in their tracks. Chelsea Shag is the real deal!
Other highlights this week include Athens’ based psych, pop, grunge band New Madrid‘s third album, magnetkingmagnetqueen (Normaltown Records), which shows the band exploring more pop-centric sounds on top of their wailing guitars, providing the band’s best work to date. Melbourne, Australia’s psych garage band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard continue their assault on your ears, with their 4th album in 18 months, their 8th since forming in 2010. Nonagon Infinity shows the band getting much heavier than their last album, Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, and really captures their live show on album. Nashville via Athens singer songwriter Lera Lynn, is back with her third full length album Resistor, which finds Lynn exploring more elements of pop rock as opposed to her more rootsy music of the past. While there is a little more pop, Lynn is still able to capitalize on her role in True Detective 2, effortlessly mixing in her haunting vocals that made her famous as a minimalist moody bar singer in the show’s shadows.
Another outstanding new release this week is Britta Phillips‘ debut solo album Luck or Magic. You might know Britta as the bass player in Luna, and she has also released three albums as Dean & Britta with husband and Luna-bandmate, Dean Wareham.
