Friday’s new album releases includes plenty to dig through this week because there’s bound to be something you’ll love this week. The names may not be huge, huge, but even without too many eye catching names, this is one heck of a week for new releases.

The names you will recognize this week are led by a surprise album from Wye Oak, with their latest Tween, and Band of Horses’ latest Why Are You OKWhile the formula for Wye Oak hasn’t changed on the surface a ton over the years, fans can immediately feel a new formula on the backend, with Tween giving plenty to explore and love. Band of Horses’ newest album is hard not to put on repeat, that in some ways feels a little bit akin to their first two albums, while still going down the path they’ve gone with the last few albums. Band of Horses is still on top of their game.

Two albums that have gotten play after play since Friday’s release over here from the OE team include Mail the Horse’s new EP, Magnolia, and Flamingods’ Majesty. Mail the Horse, out of New York, have always had the ability to fit right at home, playing a farm in the south, or totally rock hard where they wouldn’t be out of place at a heavier festival setting. On Magnolia, the band leaves the heavier stuff behind, exploring more 70’s rock with a southern flair and a Laurel Canyon attitude. The band is growing, further exploring their sound and it’s definitely one of this week’s best new releases.  Flamingods, a psych rock/world music group from Bahrain, were a new introduction to me this week, and now I just can’t get enough. Their new LP Majesty is akin to early Yeasayer, when the band was at their experimental best.

If rock ‘n’ roll is your thing well there’s plenty of great new rock albums this week from Diarrhea Planet, one of Nashville’s best, the Gotobeds new Sub Pop album who our own Matt Ellis called their single “Brass Not Rash” one of the best songs he’s heard this year. The Shelters and People’s Blues of Richmond are two more albums that will melt faces. Of course you can’t sleep on BRONCHO’s latest album Double Vanity.
