PREMIERE: Brian Revels & the Heat Lightning “Full Moon Mind”

We first got to know Brian Revels about 5-6 years or so ago with his former folk band, the three piece City Mouse. They charmed audiences around the Southeast, especially in their hometown of Atlanta for a couple of years that even included a cross country tour and a lot of good times. City Mouse eventually dissolved a few years ago as the members moved on to different parts of their lives and other projects. Since then, Revels has been working towards his next move. Today we are excited to premiere the brand new single from Brian Revels and his new band, the Heat Lightning, “Full Moon Mind.”

Since City Mouse disbanded, Brian Revels has stayed an active member of the Atlanta music community while honing his craft as a solo songwriter and eventually full band featuring up to 7 members. Working with an all star cast of Atlanta/Athens musicians, Brian Revels & the Heat Lightning recorded with Damon Moon and Chandler Galloway at Standard Electric Recorders Co. to bring alive Revels’ vision. Now the band is ready to release their album, Jasper County Blues, on May 30th, 2020.

The first single from the upcoming album, “Don’t Wanna Learn This Lesson“, was more of a barnburner. Revels and the band are all well versed in everything from bluegrass, blues, country, and of course, folk music, and that single wraps it all into a foot stomping good time.

Brian Revels & the Heat Lightning premiere new single "Full Moon Mind"

On the latest single, “Full Moon Mind”, Revels starts the song off minimal; a soulful ballad that shows off the songwriting with the band perfectly filling in the soft spaces. Revels passionately sings just over the delicate female vocals harmonizing along with him. The song is about the demons of someone that feels like a stranger, even to themselves. Heck, he is just trying outrun himself in the song, scared and just wanting to take the easy route, go somewhere else. Be someone else. The song continues to grow as Revels howls “I’ve got a full moon mind and werewolf soul”, eventually building into a crescendo where he hits that line even harder, then belts “so who I’ll be tonight / I can’t be sure / so I take a train” as the band continues to pull out the emotion.

“Full Moon Mind” is both heartbreaking and sad, yet leaves you with a sort of uplifting feeling. Almost as if sometimes you just need to take that leap of faith and hop on that train, for the betterment of those around you, and especially yourself. The relief comes from actually making a decision, taking that long train out West; moving forward with whatever is next in life whether that train has a return trip booked or not. And that’s what makes “Full Moon Mind” so captivating.

Listen to “Full Moon Mind below, and don’t miss the Jasper County Blues Album Release Show at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA on Saturday, May 30th.
