Open Ears is proud to premiere Pageant, the first EP being released under Jay Samuel’s new alias Jay Americana (formally known as NEWMONEY). While following familiar musical quirks and characteristics, the 21-year old, Atlanta-based DIY experimental trap-pop artist is reintroduced with a new level of self-progression.
“Pageant was born out of a weird place in my life. I was very disillusioned with making music and felt as if I wasn’t progressing despite the efforts I made. I realized that, in a really basic way, life revolves around a desire for acceptance, whether it be from ourselves, relationships, community, or strangers.” Samuel managed to effortlessly display the theme of universal reciprocation and the desire for belonging throughout every moment of the six-track release.
Pageant finds perfect bridge between hazy lyricism and a playful personality thanks to Travis Bickle, an ATL producer and friend of Samuels. Notable influences from artists such as Porches, Frank Ocean, Janet Jackson, and Lorde gave Samuel a means of expression that feels confrontational yet harmless with tracks that work perfectly for going out or having a night in. Jay Americana manages to tackle ideas of self-identity and self-expression that are emphasized in a seemingly unorthodox fashion and the theme smoothly carries from one track to another. The release has attributes that almost any listener can find enjoyable.
