Best Coast – Piedmont Stage

If you’ve ever been in a tumultuous relationship and Taylor Swift just doesn’t cut it when you’re feeling-out your punk rock angst, you are likely already a fan of Best Coast. Lucky for you, the L.A. based band will bring their soulful, relationship-questioning lyrics to Shaky Knees at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 10.

The band’s new album, “California Nights,” is set to release May 4, 2015, so their Shaky Knees performances are sure to be fully cranked with the band launching off the high of a recently released work. Their new music has a “driving through the desert at night with the windows down” kind of vibe that includes the California-lo fi reverberations of guitarist Bob Bruno and badass pop-punk vocals of singer Bethany Cosentino

This is a great band that sounds amazing live. They’ve been around since 2009, and they know what they are doing. In fact, it’s pretty darn tough to find a live recording of this band not sounding amazing. Also, I for one am always pumped to see what Bethany is wearing. She has the whole “I look amazing but also like I didn’t try that hard,” California-free-spirit thing down. This band is just cool. Oh, and check out their Instagram for a surprise appearance by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and forever imagine Elaine from Seinfeld dancing to Best Coast songs.

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls – Ponce De Leon Stage

Frank Turner

By Robert Mahony

Churning out solo material since 2006, Frank Turner of Hampshire, United Kingdom, is an acoustic-based solo artist who’s sound tends to harken the likes of both Frightened Rabbit and The Gaslight Anthem, the latter of which he actually toured with 2009. Turner, who is backed by his 4 piece band The Sleeping Souls, chose to step away from his former post-hardcore outfit Million Dead, deciding to take an approach more country and folk than his previous efforts. With catchy hooks and a charming accent, Turner keeps fans constantly engaged with a live show that always promises to deliver. He’s currently touring in support of his latest album “The Third Three Years”, his sixth effort since going it alone.

On the final day of Shaky Knees weekend, Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls can be found playing opposite of both Heartless Bastards(Great roots rock from the American Midwest) and Best Coast(Indie Alternapop duo out of sunny Cali, which the sound very much so recalls). If you’re more akin to the likes of a mellow crowd that will be hanging on the artist’s every word than that of either a bombastic performance, cozy up to the Ponce De Leon Stage around 3:45 and you will not be left disappointed.

Heartless Bastards – Buford Highway Stage

Heartless bastards

By Kristen Jones

The Heartless Bastards are known for their fantastic live performance so missing them really shouldn’t be on your agenda. These Ohio natives have that awesome grungy blues feel to them that I just can’t seem to get enough of. In fact, thanks to The Black Keys, they got hooked up with Fat Possum Records. It really doesn’t take much to fall in love with the lead singer/guitarist/pianist/total badass, Erika Wennerstrom who is really the core of the band. Heartless Bastards have been around since the early 00’s and have been kicking ass since the beginning. They have released four albums with the fifth, Restless Ones coming out in June of this year. This means quite a variety to share with the Shaky Knees crowd. Get amped! This band is going to rock your socks off!
